Farfl’s first hotel stay

Finding a dog-friendly hotel is no easy feat.

Last weekend was visiting day at my kid's camp. In Sudbury. Which will mean nothing to anyone unless they live in Ontario, Canada.

I'm a city slicker now, but I grew up in darkest Warwickshire. Very pretty, very rural, tiny village, not much going on. But a damn site cuter than Sudbury.

But I digress - this blog post is not supposed to be about Sudbury, it's supposed to be about Farfl's first experience staying in a hotel.

The first problem was finding a hotel which was dog-friendly. The Holiday Inn was fully booked, so we went with the Best Western, whose website made it sound like a downtown Sudbury delight. Well....the hotel was okay, but the neighbourhood was grim. We were opposite the Salvation Army drug rehabilitation centre and surrounded by the LCBO and Tim Horton's. Again, for anyone who doesn't live in Ontario, or even Canada, this may not mean very much, but suffice it to say that it was sketchy, to say the least.

Farfl coped with the drive admirably - she was crated on the back seat of the car and slept - we didn't hear a peep from her. I took her out for bathroom breaks when we stopped for gas and she did really well. Once we'd checked in I took her out to the park (avoiding the dodgy smack-heads) then we grabbed drive-through McDonalds before boarding the bus up to the camp.

She coped well with the crowds of parents and kids (she got many admiring glances and comments) and managed to sleep through the entire concert, which was really noisy! All of the parents were invited to a bar back in Sudbury and we managed to smuggle her in my big purse which I made when she outgrew my previous Farfl-carrier. Overnight she slept in her crate in our hotel room without making a sound.

The next day we went to the mall (where a mall cop spotted her and told me I had to take her outside - I popped her in my purse!) and a restaurant and some other stores - she behaved impeccably! Again on the drive home she slept in her crate on the back seat and although she was glad to get home I think it won't be long before we take her on another trip.

My husband was impressed with how well she did - he was a bit worried that it might be stressful having the dog with us. But overall he was impressed! Hooray!
