Knit a chihuahua sweater

Every chihuahua loves a handknitted sweater!

Every chihuahua loves a handknitted sweater!

It's been getting a little cooler in Toronto these past few days.

I'd been meaning to knit Farfl a few sweaters for the Autumn, but had been busy knitting socks for myself and my girlfriend Sarah.

Then one evening last week when Farfl balked at going outside I knew I had to pull my finger out!

I don't know about you, but I find it really difficult finding knitting patterns for very small dogs like Farfl. Then I found a great book of patterns called Doggie Knits: Sweaters & Accessories for Your Best Friend by Corinne Niessner. In there is a pattern called "Astro Sweater" which was designed for a one-pound chihuahua puppy. Now although Farfl isn't one pound (she's three and a half) the intermediate size offered in the pattern was just right (although I lengthened it a bit so that it would reach almost to Farfl's tail).

It uses sock yarn which means the sweater is machine washable and if you pick a self-striping yarn the sweater looks really impressive. I knit a lot of socks so I have small amounts left over which will now be used to knit up into lovely outfits for Farfl.

This particular sweater was made out of the left-overs from a pair of socks for my sister (the pink and yellow yarn) and my brother-in-law (the green yarn). You can't quite see it in the picture, but one of the legs on the sweater is lilac and the other bright orange. Farfl's black fur is really set off by the sour candy colours!

Doggie Knits: Sweaters & Accessories for Your Best Friend also has patterns for blankets, felted beds, collar cozies and toys. Highly recommended!

I’m trying to knit a swerater for a friend’s chiuaua who’s 3 pounds. Do you have the pattern?

    Hi Diane

If you look at the blog post above the link to the book where I got the sweater from is at the very end. I based Farfl’s sweater on the Astro pattern – it’s for dogs from 1lb!

Here’s the link again in case you missed it – Doggie Knits
